An Hsuan is a compassionate and empathetic Meisner teacher who skillfully guides his students to be open and vulnerable. As Stanislavski taught, vulnerability is the most crucial aspects of an actor’s craft, and An Hsuan truly understands this principle. Thanks to his expert guidance, his students are able to develop a deep and authentic connection with themselves and therefor with a character they perform.
Going through the Taiwanese educational system as an actor, An Hsuan always was burdened by this inner urge of perfection in his performances. There was this pressure to “achieve” as if there was some imaginary finish line of “quality” that had to be passed. Consequently, he started to feel overwhelmed by the act of acting, losing both his passion and self-confidence.
The Meisner technique restored his faith in the noble craft of acting. During the training, An Hsuan learned the importance of listening to your partner and responding accordingly. He re-discovered how to be open to the experience, removing the distracting pressure of wanting to be “good” and instead build genuine, spontaneous and living characters from the inside out.
As a teacher, An Hsuan brings the sense of wonder and gratitude for his career-defining discovery to his students, hoping to pass on a genuine passion for acting to all of those who – like him – realize that vulnerability and openness may be the first step towards creating living, breathing performances that can sweep away an audience.
