Screenwriters do not often get a chance to see their work come to life before it becomes a fully fledged production. Yet performing a screenplay with a group of professional actors sitting around a table (a so-called “table read”) can yield a tremendous amount of professional insights, constructive feedback and even brand new ideas for the writer.
The Meisner studio organizes table reads for screenwriters, where professionally trained actors read and act out prospective scripts in a small and intimate setting. This is a perfect opportunity to try out dialogue and tone, work on character development and see if the story “works”. Table reads are a great way for producers as well to gain insight into the workings of the screenplay in practice. These reads are conducted in a “safe space” (with either no audience or a very limited one). Participating actors are aware this is not a casting but a reading and will therefore provide very honest and frank feedback.
