Life beats down and crushes our souls and theatre reminds us that we have one. At least the type of theatre that I’m interested in; that is, theatre that moves an audience. You have the opportunity to literally impact the lives of people if they work on material that has integrity. But today, most actors simply want to be famous. Well, being an actor was never supposed to be about fame and money. Being an actor is a religious calling because you’ve been given the ability, the gift to inspire humanity.

Sanford Meisner (1905 - 1997)

Is the training open to everyone?

Classes are open to anyone who is 18 years of older, who has a true passion for acting, a good deal of curiosity, a lively imagination, and a willingness to learn and grow. However, the Meisner technique is a professional training that requires a significant time investment and a great deal of dedication. Please make sure you have room in your life for such a commitment before you sign up. Ultimately, the key to success is not the amount of previous experience as an actor, but a positive attitude towards self-improvement, a willingness to work hard, and a positive attitude.

How do I submit my application?

Send an email with a brief (no more than 400 words/600 characters) written statement on why you want to take acting (drama) classes, and why you want to study the Meisner technique in particular. Please include a short bio, resume or career overview, and a recent photograph.

Does signing up or taking the call mean I am automatically admitted?

Unfortunately not. We have more applications that we have room in our classes. Our selection procedure is intended to only admit applicants that show a genuine interest and aim to follow the training at a professional level. Also: we take great care in creating course groups with a correct gender balance and equal levels of talent and skills. We might advise you to enroll in another group if that is the case.

What happens after my I send my application?

Depending on the course of interest, once your application has been received, we will contact you with enrollment details and arrange an interview at the Studio.

All Two-Year applicants will have an interview with the acting teacher. Once you have been admitted, we will send you an email with the payment details. Please pay on time to ensure your place in the course.

Do I have to audition to be part of the Studio?

Normally there is no audition required for taking the training at the Taipei Meisner Studio. We do, however, require an interview in person or online via video call.

What is the expected workload for the training?

Classes are twice a week, with a duration of around three hours each. You are expected to practice out-of-class with a partner as well. During class, participant will present the work that they have prepared at home. This out-of-class workload amounts to at least six hours a week.

Can I just study for one year – or less? I’m not sure if I can commit to two years.

It takes at least two years to learn the craft of acting, not to mention another 10-20 years of working experience to truly master the craft. We do not recommend that you only take the first year, but urge you to consider the studio training as an investment in yourself and a commitment to your career as an actor.

What happens when I drop out?

If you drop out or cancel after the course has started, you are not required to pay the next installments, but we do not provide partial refunds for segments already started. Classes cancelled due to the Taiwanese CDC measures will be fully refunded. We follow the regulations and guidelines of the Taiwanese government (CDC).

Do I need to follow additional trainings?

The Meisner training is a self-contained and complete program. However, In your journey to become an actor and artist, it is very helpful to enroll in additional movement classes that help you connect with your body (your most important instrument!), as well as voice classes that can help you find and control your natural voice. Some of these optional classes are offered by the Meisner Studio throughout the year.

What level of commitment is required?

As an actor, your growth in the Meisner training is determined by a simple rule: you will get out of it what you put in. There are no shortcuts and no substitutions for hard work. If, during the course, a teacher finds that a student is not adequately committed or engaged, or is not cooperating with their classmates, they will be asked to re-evaluate their priorities and career choices.

Can I skip classes?

As a rule, no. The Meisner program requires a serious commitment to yourself, the craft of acting and to your fellow classmates, who will come to rely on your presence in class to perform their scenes. This also goes for the out-of-class assignments. Only students who have prepared their homework will be allowed to actively participate during class and show their work.
